Delta Western – Former Petro Marine Tank Farm – Characterization

The former Haines Tank Farm was required by the state to perform characterization of soil contamination and closure of groundwater injection well and associated oil water separator.  Fuel was removed from filtration systems and soil samples collected to characterize the truck rack area.  Characterization determined response action and satisfied ADEC requirements.

Atqasuk Phase 2 Site Assessment – NALEMP

Chilkat Environmental was hired by another consulting firm to perform soil and water sampling.  Jacklynn performed the fieldwork and report preparation for this remote site.  While we perform most NALEMP projects directly for Tribes some projects involve working with other firms. For this project we provided hourly services as contract employees of the other […]

Native Village of Atka – NALEMP Puganax Creek Investigation

Elders in Atka told of buried drums in their village dating back to WW2.  EPA funded investigation in 2011 but the contractor failed to identify the buried drums. Elders remained concerned until APIA contracted Chilkat to investigate under the NALEMP.  Upon arrival Elijah requested presence of village elders who promptly pointed to the location […]

Haines Borough – Revision of Haines Coastal Zone Management Plan

The Haines Coastal Zone District was the only in the state to define its boundaries at the city limits instead of the borough limits.  Chilkat Environmental performed a comprehensive resource inventory and analysis to include the entire borough in the zone.  Environmental Planner Glenn Gray supported planning components while Jacky, Will and Elijah […]

Community Waste Solutions – Landfill Hydrology Design

This project required design of interception systems to divert clean surface and subsurface water from contact with garbage. To minimize costs the design was installed by landfill personnel and supervised by Elijah.  Test pits were advanced throughout the facility to determine substrate composition. A series of 25-foot deep ditches were filled with tires covered with […]

Community Waste Solutions – Landfill Water Quality

Twice a year water quality samples are collected for ADEC Solid Waste Division for landfill compliance.  Chilkat prepared the sampling plan and carries out the sampling.  Drainage problems were identified that could impact water quality and additional work carried out to design and implement surface and subsurface interception to reduce garbage contact with surface […]

Constantine Minerals LTD – Baseline water quality sampling

In 2010 Chilkat developed the Quality Assurance Project Plan for water quality sampling for 20 surface water creeks.  One round of sampling was performed in 2010 and 2011. Helicopters were used to access the remote sites. Sampling included baseline water quality parameters using portable meters as well as lab samples for metals. Related Experience: Chilkat […]

Chilkoot Lumber Company – EPA TSCA Fines Negotiation

Ed Lapeyri bought the Chilkoot Lumber Company Mill after a litany of environmental issues caused by previous owners plagued the property.  In 2008 Ed hired Chilkat Environmental to cleanup the closed millsite and community powerplant.  After the successful cleanup of the entire mill including 28 PCB devices and associated dielectric oil the EPA levied fines […]

Captain’s Choice Motel Contaminated Site

Characterization identified failed UST and coordinated installation of groundwater interception system installed to continuously processes polluted water through oil-water-separator and granulated activated carbon filter.  Ongoing operation has proven successful and biannual sampling demonstrated effluent is satisfactory while over 75 gallons of fuel has been recovered so far. President, Larry Beck (907) 314-0109.       […]
