Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska NALEMP – Navy Mess Hall PCB Characterization

 

Chilkat Environmental prepared the Cooperative Agreement between DoD and the Tribe to fund soil characterization for PCB at this site impacted by transformers that leaked after Japanese bombing.  Workplan was prepared and approved in spring and work will be performed summer 2014.  A University of California, Santa Cruz, student collected data that identified high PCB levels in Blue Mussels at this site.  This finding led to inquiry to determine and characterize the source of PCB.  Over 80 samples were collected for PCB to determine the extent and concentration of contamination to inform cleanup remedies.
